The Wonder in the Kitchen
Suds has kept the Goose’s kitchen since before Bryony’s time, and she keeps it in a happy clatter of pans and offended spoons.
She is a kitchen-sprite: quick, fizzy, and well-meaning. Hers is the impossible kitchen where the stove seems to know what a village will need before the village does. When the inn hops to a celebration, Suds is already planning for it. A jug of mint water is set out with the sprig still beaded. The shelves are put briskly to rights after the night’s travel. The cordial-crocks stand scrubbed and waiting in a row. She is the reason a weary Keeper can walk in the door and find the kettle warm without having filled it.
Cross her and a spoon taps once against a crock in prim reproach. Please her and it taps in satisfaction. Either way she vanishes back into the kitchen before you can thank her properly, leaving one last small clink as something is set down exactly where it belongs. A good kitchen and a good sprite are most of what makes the Goose feel like home.
