The Realm You Make Your Way Through

Wending is the sort of place you reach by not being in a hurry to get anywhere else.

It is a quilt of small kingdoms, and nobody agrees quite how many. They squabble over cheese and borders, never over anything that draws blood. In between lie the things worth the journey: farmlands under big skies, orchard country thick with cider, market greens where a week’s news arrives by leaflet and gossip over the fence. There are cities with castles too, though they keep to the far edges and mind their manners.

Here fairy tales are simply true, and a little bit crooked. A retired godmother might keep bees. A homesick troll might want directions. Magic is ordinary as weather and about as reliable. It makes things wondrous, it makes things worse, and it never does your work for you.

What holds Wending together is not a crown. It is the roads, the letters, and the long habit of sitting down to supper together. You do not conquer a place like this. You wander it.
